Public Transport Information

There will be a transport coordinator throughout the LAP action, to arrange the use of the minibus we shall have available, and to put people in touch with those with cars who can offer lifts to and from the bus and railway stations, USAF Lakenheath and accommodation places. The more notice the coordinator has of your needs, the more likely they will be fulfilled. The transport coordinator can be contacted via email from now until 11th July at jimhr6@gmail.com or after 11th July you can phone Jim or Martin on 0793-5545-159.

Here is general information about some of the most relevant public transport services in the area.

Friday, July 12: bus services from the railway station into the city centre, etc.

Anyone arriving at Norwich by train will find that there is a bus shelter (to the far right as you exit the station building) with maps and details of all bus services from there. Bus services 14, 15, 16, 25 and 26 all go to the city centre from there, at 15 or 30 minute intervals on each line. For the Friends Meeting House on Upper Goat Lane, leave the bus at Castle Meadow (only 3 to 4 minutes from the station), walk away from the Castle, downhill towards the market. With the market on your left, pass to the right of the Guildhall, Upper Goat Lane is on the right. The Friends Meeting House is on the left, halfway along Upper Goat Lane.

Saturday, July 13: public transport services to Wymondham for the afternoon rally.

For people who are not planning to take part in the walk from Norwich to Wymondham after the send-off rally, but who do wish to get to Wymondham to leaflet there and welcome the walkers when they arrive at Wymondham Cross, at about 4.30 pm:

  1. Buses 6, 14, 15 and 16, from Norwich to Wymondham depart from Castle Meadow or St. Stephen’s Street at half-hourly intervals. The journey takes 25 to 30 minutes and takes you all the way to Wymondham Cross, where the rally will take place. Do note that any walkers who are getting tired will be able to pick up a bus along the way. Any people leaving Norwich by bus could get off and join the walk at or after the Cringleford Interchange stop.
  2. Train services: there are 25 trains a day from Norwich Railway Station to Wymondham Station, taking about 12 minutes and costing from £5.60. From the station, take Becketswell Road to the town centre, past the abbey and to the right towards Wymondham Cross.

Sunday, July 14: public transport services from Wymondham to the rally at Thetford.

Our leafleting and rally in Thetford will take place between 12 and 2pm.

  1. Bus service: hourly from Wymondham Cross on First Bus, with a 10 min stop in Attleborough to change bus service. The whole journey takes around 50 minutes.
  2. Train services: there are 25 trains a day from Wymondham to Thetford, taking around 22 minutes and costing from £11.80 (cheaper with a railcard!).

Sunday, July 14, and thereafter: public transport services from Thetford to Brandon.

  1. Bus service: 86 is hourly, taking about 17 minutes to Brandon. Bus services 200 and 201 from Thetford also go to Brandon and onwards to Mildenhall. The 200 goes via the Viewing Area at the airbase (but not to the Main Gate).
  2. Train services: around 17 a day, from Thetford to Brandon, taking around 9 minutes, and costing from £5.80. The train service from Brandon to Lakenheath village appears to have only five trains a week.

For people simply visiting the Peace Camp at the Lakenheath Base via London.

There are hourly direct train services between London and Brandon (via Ely and Cambridge) from Kings Cross (1hr 45min); from St Pancras (2hrs 6min); and from Liverpool Street (2hrs 18min).

For those wishing to park their cars/vans when visiting Lakenheath Base there is a Viewing Area about 2 miles away. We will do our best to provide a shuttle bus service between the viewing site and the main gate but please be patient when the bus is needed elsewhere.
