The sun shone on the third day of the peace walk from Norwich to RAF (USAF) base at Lakenheath, Suffolk. About 30 peace walkers will arrive at the main gate of the RAF base on Monday 15th July afternoon to set up a 24/7 peace vigil and camp. A rally in the market square in Brandon will gather people together to talk about why Lakenheath Alliance for Peace, an alliance of 34 organisations and scores of individuals all wanting nuclear weapons and war to end, are setting up a peace camp until 25th July, and who knows what next.
On 14th July in Thetford discussions were held with a broad range of people. One was with a Russian woman who agreed that all nuclear weapons needed to be abolished. She had endured 8 years living under near seige in the Donbas. Almost every day having to escape bombing by the Ukraine government forces fighting the Russian backed seperatists. Noone gains from any conflict and violent conflict only leads to more violence. Nothing has been solved between Ukraine and Russia and now there is serious talk about using ‘tactical nuclear weapons’ in Ukraine. No nuclear weapon, once exploded, does not devastate vast areas and contaminate wherever the wind takes the fallout and radiation, it is not contained to ‘the battlefield.
This is one of the reasons peace activists are raising awareness about the dangers of nuclear weapons and the desperate need to abolish them all.
They can never be used but are not a deterent against conflicts. The world proves that with ever increasing wars and desperately destructive taking place. The current global tensions are immense and very frightening. Nuclear weapons may well be used when a country is feeling so under treat they resort to using a nuclear weapon. We are very close to this situation in the world and the US bringing nuclear weapons back to UK soil makes us a direct target
We must abolish all nuclear weapons now.
Come and join us at the Main Gate at RAF Lakenheath. Raise awareness amongst friends and neighbours wherever you are.. As this is written fighter planes fly overhead
