Current number of nuclear warheads


Despite progress in reducing nuclear weapon arsenals since the Cold War, the world’s combined inventory of nuclear warheads remains at a very high level: nine countries possessed roughly 12,100 warheads as of early 2024. Federation of American Scientists

Many of these weapons are vastly larger than were nuclear weapons of the past, while others are smaller and terrifyingly described by the U.S. government as “more usable.”

From a high of 70,300 active weapons in 1986, as of 2024 there are approximately 3,750 active nuclear warheads and 13,890 total nuclear warheads in the world. Many of the decommissioned weapons are stored or partially dismantled, not destroyed.
