The Peace Camp and Vigil at RAF Lakenheath continues – 18th July

Around 40 peace activists from all over the UK and some from Europe, have set up a peace camp at the main gate of RAF (USAF) Lakenheath to protest against and raise awareness about the return of US nuclear weapons to the base.

When one of the people at the camp was asked why it was important to raise awareness about the US nuclear weapons and the role the RAF base has in supporting conflicts in the world, he replied:

“The nuclear bombs at USAF Lakenheath rely on satellite guidance systems. If a war starts, in the first minute, the satellites would be jammed, and the bombs would be next to useless.

The only way these bombs can be used is if they are used before a war. They are a peace time first strike madness thought up by the US military. They are a waste of money, they can never be described as defensive, they are dangerous, polluting and they are here without the consent of the British people.

I am protesting at Lakenheath because I want to wake up the media to what is happening here in the UK. If just one media outlet helps to alert people to this horror my peaceful protest will be worth it.”  Alan Wright BSc (Hons) CEng

The women’s peace camp at Greenham Common stayed for 19 years until the US nuclear weapons were removed and the land returned to the people.

Lakenheath Alliance for Peace hope it won’t take that long to remove the nuclear weapons this time.

Come and join us at Lakenheath RAF base or raise awareness in your community about the threat these weapons pose to the world and the planet’s future. We live in very scary times and need the build bridges between everyone – not destruction.
